Gold Britannias, Sovereigns or bars: which is better value for a UK buyer?

For most UK buyers the best value comes down to two things: whether you want the tax advantage of legal-tender coins, and how divisible you need your gold to be. Bars are the cheapest per gram; 1oz Britannias add a modest premium but are free of Capital Gains Tax; Sovereigns cost the most per gram but are the most flexible to sell in small amounts, and are also CGT-free.

Premium: bars give the most gold per pound

Bars carry the lowest premium over spot because they are the simplest to produce, so a 1oz bar is usually the most gold for your money. 1oz Britannias cost a little more. Sovereigns, which contain about 0.235oz (7.3g) of gold, carry the highest premium per gram, because more of the price is minting and the coin is small.

Divisibility and resale

Smaller units are easier to sell a bit at a time. If you may want to release some of your holding gradually, Sovereigns or several 1oz coins are more flexible than one large bar. Sovereigns and Britannias are also the most widely recognised UK coins, so any dealer will buy them back readily.

Tax: coins win

This is often the decider. Gold Britannias and Sovereigns are UK legal tender, so they are completely free of Capital Gains Tax however much they rise. Gold bars are VAT-free like coins, but any gain is potentially chargeable to CGT above your annual allowance (£3,000 for 2026/27, taxed at 18% or 24%). So which should you buy?

If you want the most metal for your money and are not worried about CGT (for example, gains within your allowance), a 1oz bar is the value pick. If you are investing a larger sum and want to shelter future gains, 1oz Britannias give you a full ounce and CGT freedom. If selling in small amounts matters most, Sovereigns are the most divisible, at a higher premium. Many buyers mix the two: bars for bulk value, coins for tax efficiency and easy resale.
